Medical education, six cities

A mission ends. The skill remains.

Sending a surgeon for two weeks helps the patients on that fortnight's schedule. Teaching while operating helps every patient after that. CMA's medical education programme is built entirely around the second outcome — physician observerships, surgical fellowships, resident education, continuing medical education, faculty exchanges, and conferences that keep Ukrainian clinicians connected to the current standard of care.

The work runs across six cities — Cleveland, Oklahoma City, Kyiv, Lviv, Zhytomyr, and Zolochiv — with twelve partner institutions including the Ministry of Health of Ukraine, the Ukrainian Military Medical Academy, Shupyk National Healthcare University, Bogomolets National Medical University, Danylo Halytsky Lviv National Medical University, Nationwide Children's Hospital, Oklahoma University's Operation Ukraine, UA MED Alliance, the Christian Medical Association, Zhytomyr Polytechnic State University, Lviv Rotary, and Save Ukraine.

War interrupts training pipelines first. Sustaining medical education through wartime is how Ukraine keeps producing the physicians it will need for decades of reconstruction.

The core academic programme: physician observerships, surgical fellowships, resident education, medical conferences, continuing medical education, and faculty exchanges, delivered across Cleveland, Oklahoma City, Kyiv, Lviv, Zhytomyr, and Zolochiv.

Every placement is built with an institution rather than an individual, so a Ukrainian department — not just a Ukrainian doctor — comes back changed. Medical conferences

An audience seated at a CMA-supported medical conference — Harvard, Kyiv, Lviv, Zhytomyr — the same curriculum conversation.

Conferences are where a technique stops being one surgeon's habit and becomes a national standard. CMA organizes, co-organizes, sponsors, and lectures at the meetings where Ukrainian wartime medicine is being written down.

Recent programming includes the Heal Ukraine Conference at Harvard Medical School in November 2025 as co-organizer; the Lviv GMKA Conference in September 2025; the Kyiv International Healthcare Summit at Shupyk University in September 2025 as co-organizer and lecturer, following a lecturing role at the same summit in September 2024; and 'Resilient Ukraine' at Zhytomyr Polytechnic State University in May 2026 as sponsor and speaker.

Ukraine drug-resistant infection research

An intensive care unit in a Ukrainian hospital — Surveillance first — you cannot treat what you cannot count.

Combat casualty care in Ukraine has produced one of the most serious multidrug-resistant organism problems in modern medicine. Wounds that survive the battlefield are lost weeks later to infection that no longer answers to first-line antibiotics.

CMA has committed a $100,000 grant and is raising a further $100,000 for nationwide surveillance of multidrug-resistant organisms acquired during combat casualty care, in partnership with the Ministry of Health of Ukraine, Bogomolets National Medical University, and University Hospital Kyiv. Phases 1 and 2 are led by the Ministry of Health; Phase 3 is run by the Cleveland Maidan Association and Kyiv team.

The expected outcome is a national surveillance system that reduces infection rates, improves antibiotic stewardship, and raises battlefield survival — findings that will outlast the war and travel far beyond Ukraine.

2024 – 2026 · Third consecutive year

Urological reconstruction initiative

Surgical equipment handed over to a Ukrainian hospital team — Third consecutive year as principal sponsor.

CMA is the principal sponsor, for the third consecutive year, of a reconstructive urology programme addressing one of the least-discussed categories of combat injury. The initiative pairs surgical missions with physician education, resident education, equipment procurement, and international collaboration.

A July 2026 equipment shipment included 870 flexible ureteroscopes alongside imaging systems, endoscopic equipment, and surgical instruments — supporting Danylo Halytsky Lviv National Medical University and its reconstruction urology team.

Operation Ukraine — Oklahoma City

Physicians meeting during a CMA-supported exchange programme — Extended placements, not observational visits.

A Ukrainian physician exchange programme hosted at the University of Oklahoma under Dr. Mims' training programme, giving Ukrainian clinicians extended time inside a U.S. academic health system rather than a short observational visit.

CMA supported the programme and participated in the training initiative in spring 2026, and becomes a co-sponsor of the Ukrainian Physician Exchange Program in fall 2026.
